FAQ = Frequently asked questions

Some of you may think that it does not make sense for a brand new website like ours to have a FAQ section, since nobody has already had the chance to ask any question....
This is true. But on the other hand a website without the so-called FAQ section would not seem serious enough. So here you have the likely-to-be frequently asked questions!

General questions
Who are you?
A: We are two brothers and a sister. We work in several industries (engineering, tourism, journalism etc.) and we have decided to join forces in order to set up a website.

Where do you come from?
A: We come from Livigno, a well-known duty-free tourist resort in Northern Italy, next to Switzerland.

Why pedrana.it?
A: Because Pedrana is our surname!!!

I share your surname!! I am a Pedrana as well!
A: Great! Send us an email, so that we will be able to set up a club among all those belonging to our clan.

How come have you decided to set up this website?
A: Because we wanted to yell the world that we do exist! ^_^ Seriously speaking, we have often found several useful information on other people's personal websites – so we have decided to do the same, by sharing our experiences. And, of course, we wanted to self-promote.

But your website is useless!
A: Feel free not to visit it...

How come have you decided to set up a website on your own?
A: Because we thought it'd be fun! Because in this way we have learned a lot (especially that we'd never ever do that anymore...). Because now we can say: "I've done this".

The website
I want a website too! To which one of you can I talk?
A: To none of us! We have set up this website on our own just because we can now be proud we had done it. We are not professionals, so we cannot (nor do we want to) create websites for other people. If you need excellent web-designers, we can recommend www.crial.net and www.longa.it, two young companies with skilled people. Hadn't we decided to work on pedrana.it on our own, we'd have asked them.

Which programs have you used to set up this website?
A: Generally speaking, we have used open-source software, i.e. whose code is free. We have made that choice not to save money, but because we wanted to show that open source is the way.
More precisely, we have used a word-processor  (mainly  OpenOffice.org) and the web editor Nvu for the creation of web pages (www.nvu.com)  on a template set up also with www.csscreator.com. Rarely the good ol' "notepad" and other Firefox plug-ins are also used (EditCSS above all). Images are processed with The Gimp (www.gimp.org). The logo has been created with OpenOffice.org Draw and The Gimp.
Pedrana.it would like to thank all those who have given suggestions for this website.
Notepad? So you use Windows!
A: Yes, although some of us is thinking about Linux. One thing at a time.

Why don't you use a php template/dynamic pages/SQL etc?
A: Because we don't know how to do this! If and when we learn, then we'll redo the website.

But the website has a copyright! Doesn't this contradict the use of open source software?
A: No.

Copyright/accountability
On your website I have found a few things of mine which is covered by copyright!
A: Please have a look with the relevant paragraph in the legal notes.

I like your logo.... Can I copy it?
A: No.

I like your logo.... Can I clone it?
A: No, and please don't insist.

I like your logo.... Can I counterfeit it?
A: Are you being stubborn? NO!

I have used information which was on this website and which proved to be wrong, an now I want to sue you!
A: Please visit the section on accountability inside the legal notes. And please tell us about the mistakes, if there are any.

I would like to add some information on your website. Whom should I talk to?
A: Just write to one of us three. After a careful evaluation we will decide whether or not to publish what you have written. Of course we do not ensure that what you send us will be published.

Do you safeguard our privacy?
A: We do. Please visit the section on privacy  inside the legal notes.

So, why have you disclosed confidential information I have forwarded you via email?
A: There are three reasons: 1) the police authorities have asked us to; 2) we had to do it to protect our right and/or interests; 3) the information mentioned above has been tapped by others, for example in a non-encrypted email. If the latter is the case, than this is just your fault....

I would like to link to you website... Can I?
A: Please do. Just let us know.

I do not like one of the websites you have linked!
A: Although we thoroughly check all the websites we link to, we cannot be held responsible for them. At the same time we cannot be held responsible by the websites who link to us. If you wish to, please write us an email about that.

I would like to publish or forward one of your email addresses, can I?
A: ABSOLUTELY NOT! In order to avoid spam, you are not allowed to publish any email address contained inside  pedrana.it. At the same time you are not allowed to use our email addresses in the carbon-copy (cc) field, when you send a message to multiple receivers. Use the Blind Carbon Copy (bcc) instead, so that our address will not be visible.

Congratulations, I like your website!
A: Thank you...

I don't like your website because...
A: This is our website, so no-one has obliged you to visit it. If you want to, please let us know what you don't like. Thanks!

Job offers
I have a job offer for you....
A: Just send an email to the relevant person.

Can I have your full CV?
A: Just send an email to the relevant person.

I think your CVs are a bit... excessive and exaggerated!
A: No, they are not. If you want to make us a job offer, you'll have every opportunity to test our skills.

Can I get in touch with one of your (former) employers?
A: If we are interested in your job offer, we will give you a few names.

Access, accessibility and standards.
Who can get access to pedrana.it?
A: Generally speaking, everybody, but just for lawful purposes and not for copying or for getting our email addresses.
Nevertheless, some categories are not allowed to have access to our website (see legal notes:  www.pedrana.it/legal/legal.htm).

Which browser should I use for pedrana.it?
A: This website has been tested with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera, all on Windows 2000. Nevertheless all browser can theoretically be used to access  pedrana.it; To do so we have engaged to respect W3C standards. This is not easy, as we are not professional web masters... Therefore we ask you to let us know if there is anything wrong. Thanks!

What are Firefox and Opera?
These are web browsers, just like Internet Explorer – according to some, they are even much safer. For further information: www.mozilla.com and www.opera.com. They are legally free to download!

What are W3C standards?
A: W3C is a consortium of companies, whose aim is to create a standard HTML syntax. The final objective is, among others, to allow a website to be surfed by every browser – even those used by blind people.

So your website can also be used by blind people?
A: We try to do our best... As we are not professionals, if you find anything not working, then please let us know. In the meantime the use of a standard code should help.

Do you think that your website could be interesting for a blind person?
A: Not particularly; but we are sure that we should allow everybody to get access to pedrana.it, as to any other website that they want to visit. We hate censorship, and consciously using non-accessible technologies represents an idiot type of self-censorship, besides being an awful example of discrimination. Moreover we already have the right technologies, and these are easy to use. This website wants to be a proof of that.

Why are you so sensitive to accessibility?
A: The question should be: Why do so many websites disregard accessibility? Please refer to the respective webmasters, in order to get an answer to this question.

But all websites are standard... And all of them are accessible!
A: Are you sure: try to have your favourite site analyzed by the W3C validator you find at: http://validator.w3.org  to see whether it is standard.
As of accessibility, try to a visit a website without images. To do so, in Internet Explorer go to Tools> Internet options> Advanced> Multimedia> Show images; with Firefox: Tools> Options> Web (or Contents)> Show images. For Opera: View> Style> User mode; then View> Style> Emulate text browser. So you will be able to partly simulate a blind's experience, and you'll realize how difficult it is to surf the web without images.

Don't you think that this accessibility issue is just like fighting a losing battle?
A: No. We don't want to convert anyone. However we think that consciously using non-accessible technologies represents an idiot type of self-censorship, besides being an awful example of discrimination.

Miscellaneous
Where are the legal notes?
A: Here: www.pedrana.it/legal/legal.htm

Why is there also a summary of your legal notes?
A: Because we know by personal experience that nobody has the time to read the unabridged version.

Why are there some articles of several constitutions and treaties in the legal notes?
A: We wanted to stress two principles: freedom of opinion and privacy of communication, two milestones of this and other websites.

I have read the legal notes, but I don't agree on some points. Can I visit your website?
A: Absolutely not.
